WHO IS GORGON HEAP?
Gorgon Heap is a large, purple, versatile Muppet monster who was very active in the first two seasons of The Muppet Show. Like many of the Muppet monsters, Gorgon Heap was most frequently seen eating things; mostly other Muppets and some humans. Gorgon Heap first appeared in The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence pilot in 1975 where he was a part of a group of monsters. He didn’t receive his descriptive name until the Panel Discussion sketch in Episode 119. Here, guest star Vincent Price names the creature Gorgon Heap and introduces him to the panel as “one of the world’s greatest eaters.” Gorgon Heap then proceeded to eat the world’s greatest chef, Pierre LaCousse for a main course before starting his dessert: Kermit.
Gorgon Heap’s first appearance on The Muppet Show came in the UK Spot for Episode 103: “Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Disappearing Clues.” Here, Gorgon Heap played the role of Fielding the Butler opposite Rowlf the Dog’s Sherlock Holmes. The monster was the culprit who ate all of the clues discovered by Holmes, including the maid (played by Miss Piggy) and Dr. Watson (played by Baskerville the Hound). Gorgon Heap also appeared and sang a line in the “Comedy Tonight” opening number in the same episode.
Gorgon also appears in Episode 116, eating Wayne before he can even get through the first verse of the song “Some Enchanted Evening.” A shocked Wanda shouts at Gorgon, telling him that “He said ‘meet,’ not ‘Eat!'” He also appeared in the cold opening of Episode 201 where Scooter finds guest star Don Knotts cowering in the corner, scared of the monster that shares his dressing room. “What’s the matter, sweetie?” Gorgon growls. “You don’t like chorus girls?”
Gorgon Heap only made one appearance in the third season of The Muppet Show as a drummer for Leslie Uggams’ opening number “Hey There, Good Times” in Episode 318. Gorgon Heap’s physical appearance often changed between episodes, with the horns on his head being removed or replaced with ears. In Episode 204, he was given a long, thin nose for the classic “Inchworm” sketch. In that sketch, Lenny the Lizard mistakes Gorgon’s nose as a long worm before the monster eats him with a big burp. Gorgon’s final appearance was as part of the group in the “Rainbow Connection” finale of The Muppet Movie.
WHY DO THE MUPPETS NEED GORGON HEAP?
Gorgon Heap adds to the already extensive cast of Muppet monsters. He’s a distinct and unique looking monster. Just cross your fingers that you don’t run into him on an empty stomach.
