WHO IS POLLY DARTON? Polly Darton, a female lavender Anything Muppet, is a country-western singer from Sesame Street created conceptually by Emily Perl Kingsley who appeared in various musical inserts from Season 13 through Season 23. Meant as a parody of real-life country singer Dolly Parton, she’s backed up by two dogs known as the Get Along Little Doggies. Some of her songs include: “Wavin’ Goodbye to You with My Heart,” “Just Say Howdy,” “Waitin’ at the Bus Stop Sign for You,” “My Triangle Home,” and “It’s Funny.” An interesting note is that sometimes Polly was performed by Camille Bonora, including the song “14 Carrot Love”.
WHY DO THE MUPPETS NEED POLLY DARTON? There have been many parody songs produced by Sesame Street. In the last decade, they are more usually performed by the recording artists who recorded the original song Sesame is attempting to spoof. Sesame could bring back Polly Darton as a nod to their roots where not only was the song parodied, but the singer as well. Plus, Polly was treated as a genuine celebrity within the Sesame Muppet realm, it’d be nice to see her make a long-deserved return to the street she owes her fame.
