Weekly Muppet Wednesday: Angel Marie

Update: After posting we discovered that a WMW was already posted for Angel Marie in April. Rather than delete it, we’ll cop to our mistake, and we’ll go and have a serious talk with our control room. In the words of Captain Smollet – Who hired this crew??

WHO IS ANGEL MARIE?
angel marie4Angel Marie made his first appearance as a vicious pirate in Muppet Treasure Island, where he and his fellow thugs attempted to mutiny against Captain Smollet (Kermit) and take the Hispaniola.  In the films climatic battle scene he is knocked unconscious by a falling branch while battling Squire Trelawney (aka Fozzie).  He is perhaps best known for his solo in ‘Cabin Fever’, where he laments floating ‘neath a tropic moon, dreaming of a blue lagoon, but has gone as crazy as a loon.

angel marie1Angel Marie returned along with a large majority of his pirate brethren as a Flying Monkey in The Muppets Wizard of Oz.  He has become a recurring background character, and also made an appearance in the ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ parody video.  He served as the chef in the gulag in Muppets Most Wanted.
Angel can also be seen in the presentation pilot for the new ABC series The Muppets, hinting that his background role will continue.

WHY DO THE MUPPETS NEED ANGEL MARIE?
Angel Marie is another strong handyman that can be used in whatever capacity and it will be funny.  With his apparent lack of established personality, Angel Marie can be whoever the writer or the audience want him to be.  With his ukulele and his fruit bowl hat, Angel Marie continues to be a prominent bit part player and hilarious design.
