In sad news this week Sonia Manzano, who has played Maria on Sesame Street since 1971, announced that she would be leaving the show after 44 years. The outpouring of love for Sonia and Maria has been amazing but not surprising. There are millions upon millions of people out there who don’t know of a Sesame Street without her there fixing toasters or telling us our ABC’s.
Sonia was our very first teacher. She was the first educational figure that we ever had, showing us how to count to 20 and which of the 4 things doesn’t belong.
On Friday morning I appeared on BBC5 Radio’s ‘Up All Night’ where Nomia Iqbal and I discussed Sonia’s retirement, which can be heard here at around the 2 hour 54 minute 21 second mark.
If you have anything you want to say about Sonia and Maria, whether it be your well wishes, favorite memories or sketches, then please send us an e-mail on firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll post them next week.
