Halloween is quickly approaching and therefore in continuing with our spooky celebrations, today I’m taking a look at the scariest Muppet moments ever. Although The Muppets have never done an actual proper Halloween special, there are an endless amount of terrifying Muppety moments to spotlight. Today I will be choosing some of the most terrifying Muppet segments of ghosts, monsters and other things that go bump in the night.
That Time Beaker Carved His Head
In attempting to find the root of the problem of their malfunctioning Carve O Matic 3000, Beaker accidentally carves his head like a pumpkin in the 2009 Youtube video found here. That night also marks the date all Muppet fans began sleeping with the lights on.
That Time Beaker Died
What have they been doing to poor Beaker? Following the last mishap, Bunsen is excited to have Beaker test out his new ghost detector. While in the process, Beaker gets struck by something and returns as a ghost. But Beaker hunting down ghosts raises the obvious question: If you see something strange in your neighborhood, who you gonna call? (Ghostmuppers? Meepbusters?)
Muppets, Monsters and Moopets, Oh My!
There are some miscellaneous Muppets that would scare the felt out of me. Some of those were Sweetums and Uncle Deadly (both current personal favorites of mine) and the assorted Muppet monsters. Most of these have become personal favorites of mine but yet they used to terrify me.
The World in Which Kermit was never born:
In Its a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie, Kermit is revealed the world in which he hadn’t been born, full of Scooter cage dancers and Fozzie pitpocketers. The world in which Kermit is never born is a horrifying place that I’d like to forget has ever existed..so moving along!
Marley and Marley
Another Christmas moment, yet this moment is one that gives me the shivers on every viewing. Statler and Waldorf return as ghosts Jacob and Robert Marley to warn Ebenezer Scrooge to change his actions for the effect of his afterlife. Wonderfully choreographed and chillingly directed, this scene is one of the most marvelous dark pieces in Muppet history.
The Time Billy Bones Died
And this was supposed to be a kids movie!
In a dramatic reading of Grim Grinning Ghosts, Rowlf is confronted by a frightening cloaked spirit.
Little Monster, Big City
The most terrifying Muppet thing isn’t actually Muppet-related at all, but those horribly unauthorized Sesame Street costumes on Times Square never fail to freak me out, often all in the same place and horribly built costumes. On every visit it seems these things are constantly increasing in numbers. Prepare yourself for the Elmo apocalypse.
The Original Snuffy
The Ultimate Nightmare fuel award goes to the original Snuffy puppet. It still terrifies me until today which is why I am writing the rest of this article from under my blanket.
But all of these choices are nothing compared to the true horrors of the most frightening Muppet moment of them all. Behold, the most terrifying thing in Muppet history…
AAAUGH! The horror! I don’t think I’ll be sleeping tonight.
So there you have it! What are some of your most frightening Muppety moments of all time?
