Why You Should Give The Muppets A Second Chance

muppetsabc

Jarrod Fairclough – Tonight The Muppets returns to television, after almost two months off the air.  The show has gone through a small retooling, the effects of which you can see at 8:30/7:30c on ABC, in order to make the show a little more appealing than it was in its first few episodes.  And that’s what I want to talk about today – I want to talk directly to the people who stopped watching the show after its first 2-3 episodes.  So, if you have someone in your life who isn’t a huge Muppet fan, and who said ‘I gave it a shot but I didn’t like it’, feel free to show them this!

Hi, friend.  Welcome to The Muppet Mindset!  I know, a whole site dedicated to puppets! Who’d have thought it, eh?

Look, your friend/family member has linked you to this article because he/she knows that you gave up on The Muppets after the first few episodes.  I want to make the argument that perhaps it’s worth a second chance!

The first few episodes weren’t the best indicator of what the show became before its 2 month break.  A lot of people complained that the show was too adult, a very valid argument that even a lot of hardcore Muppet fans thought was a little too much.  Well, you’ll be glad to know that the overly adult jokes have been dialed right down, especially after these first few episodes.

KERMIT THE FROG

A lot of people also complained about Kermit, saying that he was too negative and mean. While I’d love to tell you that this issue was fixed, it is something that has unfortunately plagued quite a few episodes, but was almost winked at and explained in the episode ‘Pigs In A Blackout’, where he attends a retreat to relax a little.  However he was given quite a few nicer moments in the later episodes, where he returns to his happy self, and it seems this will continue with this retool.

MISS PIGGY

Miss Piggy was accused by people as being a diva, which she probably took as a compliment, and that is something that this retool is trying to fix, as new showrunner Kristin Newman has stated.  That said, there are a few episodes where Miss Piggy shows her softer side, like ‘Pig Out’, ‘Walk the Swine’ and ‘Single All The Way’.

THE GREAT GONZO

Gonzo was accused of being too placid, and this whole thing was the basis of the episode ‘Going Going Gonzo’, which has been called the best episode of the season.  If you’re only going to give one more episode a try, may I suggest this one?  Gonzo gets to be more ‘Gonzo like’, and it continues on, with a very Gonzo moment in Episode 12, airing next week.

Miss Piggy Sorry Song

A lot of people didn’t like the fact that there just wasn’t enough music in the show – well, we hear you!  We weren’t fans of that either.  However the writers must have listened, because throughout the remaining 7 episodes there were around 3 or 4, including ‘Rainbow Connection’, and a sweet moment involving the entire cast and guest star Mindy Kaling.

MISS PIGGY, KERMIT THE FROG

And finally, so many people complained online that Kermit and Piggy were no longer an item.  It’s lead to one of the main arcs of the series, and it continues to drive a lot of character development between the two, especially in ‘Single All The Way’.  Having seen the next two episodes, I can confirm that the story arch is continued.

So look, we get you.  We know that sometimes a show doesn’t find its feet until a few episodes in, so if you’re reading this and thinking ‘Well, it sounds like it improved’, believe us – it has!  Head on over to ABC’s website where you can watch the first 10 episodes!  (And if you’re strapped for time, I’d recommend ‘Pig Out’, ‘Going Going Gonzo’ and ‘Single All The Way’.)  Enjoy!
